3.02 Install and replace printer consumables

  • Thermal Printer

  • A printer that uses a heating element to create images on special thermal paper. Commonly used for receipts, labels, and barcode printing.

  • 3-D Printer

  • A printer that builds solid objects layer by layer from materials like plastic, rubber, carbon fiber, or metal alloys, based on a 3-D model.

  • Processing Stage (Laser Printer)

  • The stage where the printer’s formatter board processes data from the computer to create a bitmap image of the page, stored in the printer’s RAM.

  • Charging Stage (Laser Printer)

  • A PCR (Primary Charge Roller) applies a uniform electrical charge across the imaging drum to prepare it for printing.

  • Exposing Stage (Laser Printer)

  • A laser fires light onto the imaging drum to create an electrostatic latent image by neutralizing specific areas of the drum's charge.

  • Developing Stage (Laser Printer)

  • Toner is applied to the charged areas of the drum, forming a visible image that will be transferred to paper.

  • Transferring Stage (Laser Printer)

  • The toner image on the drum is transferred to paper by applying a positive charge to the paper using a transfer roller.

  • Fusing Stage (Laser Printer)

  • The toner is permanently bonded to the paper by passing the paper through a fuser assembly, which applies heat and pressure.

  • Cleaning Stage (Laser Printer)

  • The imaging drum is cleaned to remove any remaining toner and electrical charge, preparing it for the next print job.

  • Duplex Printing

  • A printing method that allows for printing on both sides of the paper, either automatically with a duplexing unit or manually.

  • CMYK Colors

  • Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black; the four colors used in color laser printers to create a full spectrum of colors.

  • Toner Cartridge

  • A replaceable component in laser printers containing toner, the imaging drum, and sometimes other components like the developer roller.

  • Ink Cartridge

  • A replaceable container in inkjet printers that holds liquid ink and, in some models, the print head.

  • Print Head (Inkjet Printer)

  • The component that sprays ink onto paper. Can be thermal (heating ink to form bubbles) or piezoelectric (using voltage to change the shape and push ink out).

  • Carriage System (Inkjet Printer)

  • Moves the print head back and forth across the paper to build the image line by line.

  • Thermal Paper

  • Special heat-sensitive paper used in direct thermal printers that changes color when heated to create images.

  • Filament (3-D Printer)

  • The "ink" for 3-D printers, typically a spool of plastic material like PLA or ABS, which is melted and extruded to build objects.

  • SLA (Stereolithography ) Printer

  • A type of 3-D printer that uses liquid resin cured by an ultraviolet laser to build objects layer by layer.

  • SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) Printer

  • A 3-D printer that uses a laser to fuse powder materials (plastic or metal) into solid objects, layer by layer.

  • Maintenance Kit (Laser Printer)

  • A set of replacement parts, including feed rollers, a transfer roller, and a fuser unit, used to keep a laser printer in good working condition.

  • Calibration (Printers)

  • The process of adjusting a printer to ensure correct print density and color balance, usually done automatically or via printer settings.

  • IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol)

  • A cleaning agent used to clean printer components, such as rollers and contacts, without damaging sensitive parts.

  • Duplexer Assembly

  • A printer component that automatically flips the paper to print on both sides.

  • Print Bed/Build Plate (3-D Printer)

  • The flat surface where material is extruded during 3-D printing. Often heated to prevent warping and ensure proper adhesion.

  • Extruder (3-D Printer)

  • The component that melts filament and lays down layers to build a 3-D object.

  • WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment)

  • Regulations requiring proper disposal of electronic waste, including printer consumables like toner cartridges and fuser units.

  • Tractor-Fed Paper (Impact Printer)

  • Paper with perforated side strips used in impact printers, which is guided through the printer by sprockets.

  • Ribbon Cartridge (Impact Printer)

  • A replaceable component in impact printers that contains an inked ribbon used to create images on paper.

  • Print Head Alignment (Inkjet Printer)

  • A maintenance procedure to ensure the print head is properly aligned for optimal print quality.

  • Slicing Software (3-D Printing)

  • Software that divides a 3-D model into horizontal layers for printing, guiding the printer on how to build the object layer by layer.

  • Carbon Paper

  • Paper used with impact printers to create multiple copies of a document in a single print pass.

  • Stepper Motor

  • A type of motor used in printers to control precise movements, such as moving the print head or advancing paper.

  • Heated Bed (3-D Printer)

  • A heated surface on a 3-D printer that helps prevent warping and ensures that the first layer adheres properly.

  • Print Quality

  • The clarity and sharpness of text and images produced by a printer, influenced by factors like resolution (DPI), ink or toner quality, and calibration.

  • Maintenance Tips for Direct Thermal Printers

  • Replace the paper roll properly, remove paper dust and debris, and clean sticky residues with appropriate cleaning solutions.

  • Direct Thermal Printer

  • A type of thermal printer that uses heat-sensitive paper to create images without the need for ink or toner.
